Esscroc Cement’s 150 years of business was celebrated at an event held on March 31 at the Nazareth Center for the Arts in Nazareth, Pa., reported the Lehigh Valley Business. Hosted by the Nazareth/Bath Regional Chamber of Commerce, the event was attended by several national, state and local dignitaries, members of the press, Chamber members and Essroc employees.
“Cement became, and is still, an important part of the economic fabric of the Lehigh Valley,” said Essroc president and CEO Alex C. Car at the event. Essroc employs 300 people at cement plants and quarries in Upper and Lower Nazareth townships and in Nazareth.
“What makes us very unique as a company is our heritage of being one of the best-known companies and best-known product lines,” noted Craig Becker, senior vice president of human resources at Essroc.
Essroc’s history dates back to 1866 when David O. Saylor opened Coplay Cement Co. In 1872, it began producing the first portland cement in North America. The company was acquired by Paris-based Ciments Francais in 1976. The name was changed to Essroc in 1990 in order to compete across North America under one name. Then two years later, Italcementi acquired controlling interest in Ciment Francais, becoming the current parent company of Essroc.
